Science is taken by all students at Junior Cycle. The student’s knowledge of science is developed through the unifying strand called The Nature of Science, along with the four contextual strands: Earth and Science, Chemical World, Physical World and Biological World.
The inquiry - based approach emphasises the practical experience for each student. In Sligo Grammar School, all science classes are taught in laboratories which further enhances the student experience.
There are two Classroom Based Assessments (CBAs), one carried out in second year and the other in third year. The first CBA is an Extended Experimental Investigation, and the second CBA is a Science in Society Investigation. The formal Assessment Task is based on the second CBA and takes place after it has been completed.
In Transition Year, students rotate between four seven week science modules: Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The emphasis in transition year is on practical and research work.
The science taught at Junior Cycle lays a firm foundation for the Leaving Certificate subjects: Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics which are offered in Sligo Grammar School.
